Sir David Low (1891 1963) was the first political cartoonist in the world to be given a contract which gave him complete freedom in the selection and treatment of his subject matter. Both the cartoonist and his proprietor at the Evening Standard, Lord Beaverbrook, always asserted that the contract was honoured to the letter. This book reveals that this was not the case. Low s independence, in reality, turned out to depend on how far Lord Beaverbrook felt that freedom should go. For the first time, this book reveals the full extent to which Low s cartoons were either refused publication or altered to tone them down. George Osborne: This book is a wonderful read.
